Well, it is what it is, as Ivana Trump would say! So, I thought I would dedicate today's blog to Social Media Week.
I was surprised when my Twitter feed got as mention on BAAF's Social Media Blog! I am very honoured to be mentioned like that, so a huge thank you to BAAF for that.
I was thinking about what exactly Social Media means, and I suppose it depends on what you use it for, but for me, it is about what kind of support you can achieve from the internet and places like Facebook, Twitter and of course, other online resources. I am lucky enough to be a member of http://www.familiesat.forumhope.com/ where I am not only a member, but I am honoured to be a Moderator. It is an online forum for people to have a moan, a groan, or even tell a happy story about their adoption journey. I am also a member of http://www.adoptionuk.org/ which is Adoption UK's website, which also has an online forum/message board. Both of these sites have a large number of people who are able to provide support, whether it cyber support or whether it is regular meet ups. The final national website I am a member of is an LGBT support site for adoption. http://www.newfamilysocial.co.uk/ has been running a few years now, and has just achieved charity status! It is in the process of being expanded to be able to assist more LGBT adoptive parents, and those who want to adopt get through the process with the support of their members. Currently New Family Social does have a membership fee, however, in my opinion, it is worthwhile paying this if you are a member of the LGBT community looking to adopt, or if you have adopted.
I am a twitter fan.... I remember the night I joined, it was a Friday night, when Jonathon Ross @Wossy had his BBC chatshow and Stephen Fry @stephenfry was a guest, and they mentioned twitter, and tweeting... I had no clue what they were on about, and the thought of being able to say something in 140 characters did not seem possible! So I joined, and thought, yawnsville! It took me a while to get used to it, and I wanted more followers, but based on my own name, that was not going to happen! So I changed it to @GayAdoptionDad and within days I was in the hundreds of followers. Of course, some of them were spammers and porn, so deleting them I found that I still had people who were interested in me and my tweets! I now have over 1700 followers, and enjoy the banter that goes on in twitter. If you are interested in twitter, and want to find out how it works then Philip Schofield @schofe has a fantastic guide to twitter. To view it click here
So, there are four twitter links for you, but I have a few more! In all seriousness, there are a lot of people on twitter that are fun to follow, however, if Adoption is your game, then why not follow these guys:
Adoption Resources: @AdoptResources
BAAF (British Association of Adoption & Fostering): @BAAFAdoption
Adoption UK: @adoptionuk
New Family Social: @gayadoptionuk
TACT Care: @TACTCare
Same sex female couple and good friends: @2moms_and_baby
A couple commencing the Adoption Process: @adoptiondiary
A couple with 8 year old newly adopted son: @adoptionali
I do enjoy the internet, and all it has to offer, however, we need to be careful these days, especially where having adopted children is concerned, with facebook being quite a potential issue with older children.... that, however, is for another blog, hopefully not too soon... touch wood!
