The last few days I have noticed my friends at @lgbtadoptfoster tweeting about LGBT Adoption & Fostering week, and I am a little dismayed to say the least.
Last year, as a family, we took ourselves off to Brighton Pride, partly as a fundraising exercise for the charity I work for, Adoption UK, the largest peer to peer adoption support agency in the UK. While we were there I was horrified, and I mean truly horrified, by the amount of people from the community who did not know they could adopt or foster.... I'm not talking one or two people out of likely 500 or more people we spoke to, I'm talking about 50 or more people from the LGBT community who had no idea, whether as a couple or single.
I am dismayed, disappointed and sad actually, that very few well known figure heads from the LGBT community have retweeted about the week. Of course you could argue that not all of these figure heads want to have children and therefore, why would they bother... But it's not about that... It's about equality and awareness.

I was recently appointed a Trustee of New Family Social - the first organisation to form to support LGBT families nearly ten years ago. I am not an LGBT activist and I am useless in an arguement unless it's an arguement with Tris, which I will normally win, but a number of really high profile people who have been vocal about LGBT rights and equality for a number of years I expected to get behind this really important message.
What is that message? It's LGBT adoption and fostering week - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transexual - married/civil partnered/common law or single - YOU CAN ADOPT!
Please shout it from the rooftops - it can make a huge difference to a child's life - - your sexuality is no longer a barrier!
I hope the message gets out there. Good luck with your campaign. I must admit I personally thought there was far much more awareness now than your survey has evidenced.
